Now this is a very serious allegation (me not knowing the English grammar), and being imparted from a man of utter ignorance not only in subtleties of English grammar but English as a language, addressing it becomes the more urgent and pressing. My only regret is that due to my constant occupancy with daily matters and chores, I have left the comment unattended, but here’s my answer. The allegation, I presume has stemmed from my somewhat relaxed attitude toward emphasizing the meticulous study of English grammar- such as many tutors insist upon. Although studying grammar is the necessary part of all my lessons and classes, I do not really think that giving it so much attention is so very important. During many years of tutoring I’ve been able to develop my own approach to teaching English, where I present the grammar intrinsically woven into the main fabric of the language. I will illustrate the notion in the course of two points presented below. 1. I insist that overly emphasizing the study of grammar is futile. We lose more than we gain. The study of grammar, as I see it must stand as a subordinate, supportive entity to reading, listening, pondering and uttering English contents as frequently as circumstances allow. In such case the study of the grammar acquires an orderly, complete and steadfast character, since the grammar is presented in the context of activities exercised, namely- in reading, listening, thinking and speaking. The result of such method is productive of thoughtful, intelligent knowledge of the language, since the student doesn’t feverishly peruse rules and ordinances of grammar but uses whole phrases and clauses free and unobstructed from his memory. This method is effective. It works. 2. A definitive knowledge of English grammar is unattainable. I stand my ground by the following illustration. Let us have a look at the writings of one of the masters of the English Language- Mr. W. Somerset Maugham, and one of his noted works: “The Summing Up” (1938, ch. 11, 12, 13). Here he writes: “But if richness needs gifts with which everyone is not endowed, simplicity by no means comes by nature. To achieve it needs rigid discipline”. There is no problem with understanding the 1st sentence. Its meaning is transparent and clear. Second one is not as clear (or is it), due to the fact that the author being preoccupied with delivering the gist of his thought, has been quite indifferent toward punctuation mark(s). As the result one is left to guess whether the author by “it” meant “to achieve simplicity” or his “it” means “one needs (rigid simplicity)”. Obviously, the second explanation is fitting. But then why didn’t the author write simply “to achieve it one needs rigid discipline”? Wouldn’t it be grammatically more precise? No. He has a reason. The author doesn’t see the meticulous nuances of grammar worth breaking his personal style, the inner music and poetry of it. And thus it fits. One more: “Whether you ascribe importance to euphony, the last of the three characteristics that I mentioned, must depend on the sensitiveness of your ear”. Why not “that I have mentioned”? Why not use present perfect, since the statement is quite general and no particular time range is involved (at least in near past)? No. The author is the owner of his words and this he declares. I hope this takes care of the above.
